Two Bishops, 280 miles, one Diocese

Birmingham’s two Anglican bishops, the Rt Revd Dr John Sentamu, Bishop for Birmingham and the Rt Revd John Austin, Bishop of Aston, are spending Lent walking the breadth and length of their diocese, visiting every church on the way.
The two bishops will walk more than 280 miles, from February 9th until March 20th.
Bishop Sentamu will set off from Worcester Cathedral at 9am on Wednesday February 9th, riding pillion on a motorbike until he reaches the boundary of the diocese near the Lickey Hills. From there Bishop Sentamu will walk through Longbridge, Northfield, Bournville and Edgbaston to the Cathedral where there will be an Ash Wednesday service at 7.30pm. On that day’s walk the bishop will visit three churches, a school, Birmingham University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before arriving at the Cathedral.
Bishop John will leave Lichfield Cathedral at around 9am and will start walking at the diocesan boundary near Sutton Park. The Bishop will walk through Boldmere, visiting St Michael’s church, Short Heath, Erdington, under Spaghetti Junction and along the canal to the city center. He will arrive at the Cathedral at 1.30pm having walked more than 11 miles.
The choice of departure points recognizes that the Diocese of Birmingham was made up of parts of the Diocese of Lichfield and the Diocese of Worcester. The new Diocese of Birmingham was formed on March 2nd 1905. A special Cathedral service will mark the actual centenary of the founding of the diocese.
After the first day, the Bishops will walk together. The length of the walk will vary between three and 12 miles, depending how many stops they are making. They will visit schools, hospitals, universities and colleges, religious communities, Winson Green prison and nearly 200 churches along the way. They hope that many from the churches will join them on the walk and they will be hoping to gain sponsorship for the Bishops' Centenary Appeal Fund.
